THE CHARACTER

Character Name: noctis lucis caelum
Series: final fantasy xv
Canon Point: chapter 13
Character Age: 20
Background: wiki link

Personality: ( this contains spoilers )
Although mostly recognized in name, Noctis exhibits few traits of actually being royalty. There is, of course, the notable ones: body language and posture. But beyond that, it’s a lot more difficult to discern some of Noctis’ core traits when people don’t know who he is.

Upon meeting him, there is an overall air of reserved ennui about his character. It doesn’t make him unapproachable, necessarily, but he tends to have trouble showing his interest in a lot of the things around him if they don’t inspire or excite him in some way. Partially, this is because of what he went through as a child -- his mother dying, being attacked and nearly killed at a young age, his father always busy protecting the kingdom and ruling as a king should -- and how isolation played a part in his disinterest. At the beginning of the game, he’s even seen either sleeping or dozing off without a care as to what’s happening around him—a by-product of the restlessness he usually feels. However, this is only the very start of what makes Noctis who he is, and while he’s slow to reveal emotion, he’s not without any. In fact, he might feel too much at times.

The circumstances of growing up and the absence of his parents did not make him bitter, surprisingly. In fact, he is very caring and displays many acts of kindness or concern for others. He’s always willing to leap forward to rescue those who are in trouble, often times without thinking ( which he has gotten quite a lot of slack for ), and sometimes, in his brashness, he tends to overlook things that might not have slipped through if he’d been levelheaded about the situation. The most prominent example of this is Ardyn changing Prompto’s appearance and causing Noctis to throw him off the train when traveling to Tenebrae. In his anger, he hadn’t recognized that something had seemed off about the entire thing, and afterwards, he spent the entirety of the trip feeling guilty for doing something so terrible as well as letting his best friend down. In that same vein, Noctis a lot of his actions stem from a fear that he won’t meet the expectations of those around him but still wants to please them nevertheless. He tends to keep a lot of his own emotions bottled up, and even then, especially at the beginning of the journey to Altissia, always seemed to refuse to confront his own feelings for a lot of things that happened. If he does, he focuses so much on his own problems that he often forgets that he should think of others over himself and how they might be suffering as well; this is a lesson that Gladio tries to beat into him several times, especially after leaving Altissia and trying to deal with the the fact that Lunafreya is dead. ( All very good coping methods, yes. )

Because of all this, for those who do know Noctis, it’s clear that he is very troubled. There is a heavy sense of duty to fulfill along with trying to figure out who he is as a person, and it often gets swept over in that desire to be someone worthy of the Lucian crown. He overcomes them in his own time, but it’s not without the help of the people at his side, who he treats as equals despite the clear distinction in their stations. Still, he does have a bit of an ego nonetheless, and it often gets him into trouble because his courageousness can also been seen as recklessness. He’d rather leap into a situation without some sort of plan despite what others might say, and even if he heeds them, it doesn’t necessarily stop him from charging in anyway.

Other notable things about Noctis include his penchant for being lazy ( really, this boy sleeps way too much if he can, and he absolutely hates mornings ) and often complaining about the obvious‐such as being tired, too hot, or too cold. He can be sarcastic and snarky, especially if paired together with Prompto, who he is very friendly with, but in retrospect to this, he can be a little shy when in the company of other people he isn’t very familiar with, sometimes hesitant to intercede unless addressed first. Really, Noctis just has trouble being a regular person with the pressure of his responsibilities always bearing down on him, and only after he’s finally learned to accept the reality of that does he begin to feel confident and act with more resolute determination since he is often hesitant to carry through with what he must do despite not wanting to do it.

Also, he can’t stand bugs and vegetables. See also no thanks.
